Something that has been a major subject for anyone who has a website is “what color should we make our buttons?”

Questions like these are essential to improving conversions and getting more of your web visitors to actually do something beyond just passively reading your article.

It takes some thought, but even more testing to find out how colors change the way your visitors use your website.

Are you trying to get more people on your email list?

How about get more people to buy your product?

You need to know how the color of the buttons on your site impact how many people click the image. The best way to learn this is to test!

Google Penguin: The Only Penguin Doing SEO

 What Is The Google Penguin?

google penguinNo, it’s not an adorable penguin that waddles around like it’s a member of Mr Popper’s Penguin tribe. It’s the new update to the Google algorithm that was officially released April 24th, 2012. It’s intention was to penalize sites for over-optimization, aka spamming. Before you get either excited or upset about this, we’re still in the early days of this so we’re not 100% sure of what the actual target for the update is. However, we have a good hunch that it’s the reason. No one likes crappy websites and the spammers that create these crappy websites.

First off, we can start to get an understanding of this update by reading what Google officially states about it. If you read the Google Webmaster blog it says this:

“The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. While we can’t divulge specific signals because we don’t want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.”

Now if you own a small business and your SEO provider(if you have one) is telling you that you need 100,000,000 backlinks from junky providers then you need to stop listening to them. In fact, cancel their service as soon as possible.

I’m so glad that I am in contact with the team who works with us over at Brain Smart SEO. As soon as the Penguin was released, they hosted a call that I had the pleasure of jumping on and listening to these guys talk about all things SEO. Apparently when you study SEO as much as the team does, you are already preparing and noticing that these things are happening.

What You Shouldn’t Do For SEO After Penguin

It used to be that you could buy a ton of backlinks from places like fiverr or other sources and load these up onto your sites.

The backlinks didn’t have to be relevant and as long as you had a bunch of them, you would outrank your opponents. To be honest, this was awesome and worked great for a while. However, now it doesn’t work quite like it used to. If you are buying thousands of poor quality links, Google is going to take this into account. They are going to actually punish you more for having an avalanche of these “poor” links.

It’s more important to have high quality and relevant links from sites that add value to your existing site.

Another aspect that is getting to be more and more important is the “social” interaction on your site. Everything from comments to interaction on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter has an effect. Every time someone clicks “Like” or “Share”, Google takes this into account. If you aren’t getting shares on your articles and posts, you need to either install a plugin that makes it easier for people to share your posts. You also need to encourage people to use these buttons and interact on your site.

What Can You Do RIGHT NOW?

One of the first things to do is get the plugin “get social” in your wordpress back office. Download and install this. Make sure you have the tweet and facebook like button and I’d recommend having the Google+ button because Google likes Google+.

Make sure you have the important links on the top of your web page. Things like “About”, “Facebook”,”Contact”,”Services” are all important and should be at the top of your web site.

The #1 thing to do is to get a subscription to SYNND. SYNND is a way to get the likes, tweets, etc rolling right off the bat. It’s recommended that you create really good content that deserves to get shared in the first place. The problem with this for most web sites is that people don’t always have that extra boost or spark to get the social media shares rolling. This gives your post social proof, and subconsciously makes more people want to share it with their friends/followers.

Another must do is press releases for your site. If you go to PRWeb.com you can buy some press releases and have them shared. Make sure you write news-worthy posts so that they really should be put out as a press release. When your press release is shared among different news sites (along with a link back to your site) you have the opportunity to get a ton of traffic back to your website. The backlinks from this press release will be great for you.

What does AuthorRank have to do with SEO?

I just finished reading the article What is AuthorRank? and really enjoyed the infographic they have set up there.

As I’ve been working on building up an SEO company and providing other businesses with these services over at Brain Smart SEO, I thought I should learn about this and even share what I was learning… Okay, maybe I’m a little obsessed and want to dominate the first page of Google for my clients. There…I said it.

How to Connect With Your Customers on Social Media

A common question that people have when they are learning about implementing social media into their business is:

This is a great question and there is really only one way to find out. You can spend time asking all of your customers where they spend time, but that can be time consuming. Time is our most valuable asset so we don’t want you wasting your time.

There is a shortcut to finding where your audience is right now and I’m going to share with you the easiest way to find this out.

As a small business owner, you should have a rolodex that has your entire customer database. Find your top 1,000 customers and prospects and take their email addresses from this rolodex. (No, you won’t be spamming them!)

Your next step is to create a brand new gmail account (they’re free) and to load all of these emails into your new gmail account. Your next step is to go to each of the social networks Facebook, Twitter, etc and sign up for them. It’s going to ask you if you’d like to find your friends using your address book, you are going to select gmail and count the number of people in your customer database that are on each service.

If your customers are already on Twitter, you should spend some time connecting with them on twitter. If they are on Facebook, but not on LinkedIn then you should spend more time on Facebook instead of LinkedIn.

The secret is to find where they already are and to make it convenient for them to communicate with you through these networks.

The Secret of Perceived Value

I’ve got a question for you.

Do you make judgments when you initially start watching online videos?

After watching this video, it’s my guess that you do make judgments about the person who is in videos you are watching. You may do this consciously or subconsciously but you are making some sort of judgments on the person presenting the information.

I don’t blame you either, I do the same thing. It’s part of our human nature for us to make assumptions and it often helps us save time and often energy.

The problem with this is when you and I are the people who are creating useful videos for our potential customers. We have to find ways to truly connect with them and to find a way to share our knowledge with our prospects.

We have to take into account that the majority of people who come across our information have never heard of us before, yet alone seen our videos or been to our blog. They are coming from a point of knowing absolutely nothing about us and that often can hurt us as business owners.

Be Aware Of What Your Videos Are Saying About You

If you are trying to sell something to the health niche, if you are out of shape and eating McDonalds in all of your videos, no one will take you seriously. Of course that’s an extreme example, but you get the point.

People are going to judge us based on what we are portraying in our videos. If you are going to be selling things to people interested in weight loss and health, it’s important that you yourself are healthy and in good shape.

If you are going to be sharing financial advise and selling products related to making money, you better have some nice clothes or a suit on that shows that you’ve used this information to succeed yourself. People are great at judging and can tell a lot about a person based on the clothes they wear and the way they use their body language.

We need to become aware of what our bodies are saying as well as what the clothes we wear say about ourselves and our business.

Keep this in mind the next time you create one of your videos for your business.
