How a Former Language Educator Can Make You Sound Like a Local

Benefit of Learning a Second Language

If you’ve ever been watching a movie and seen one of your favorite American actors speaking a foreign language as if he or she has been speaking it their whole lives, you may feel like you’ve seen a miracle happen.

The truth however, is that it is simply a way of using your brain in a way that you aren’t used to. It’s the same as when you first learn how to do anything else.

Until you learn a secret to cut your time in half, you’re going to struggle with doing anything.

For example, in July of 2012 I spent a little over a week in Costa Rica.

It was one of my goals or missions to learn how to surf while I was on this trip.

Chris Hughes surfing in Costa Rica

Holla, learned how!!

I’ve heard from a lot of people who have tried to learn how to surf that it’s something that is extremely difficult.

Personally, I don’t like listening when people tell me something is hard. I laugh a lot of the time when people tell me things are difficult.

While I didn’t get up and ride the first 2 waves I hopped onto ( I tipped the board forward too much), the third time I was up and riding like I’d always done it.

What was the secret?

Honestly, I’d watched some videos on YouTube and asked questions to experts.

I learned the little shortcuts that would cut the learning curve down for me.

The same is true with anything you do, you find the shortcuts and you save yourself a LOT of time.

The National Security Agency and other important government organizations have purchased this rapid language learning method: the Pimsleur Approach, which has proved to be the fastest way tolearn a new language.

The benefits of learning a second language

Your brain is already wired to learn a language in 10 days. You just need to activate it.

In today’s global society, learning a foreign language is crucial, whether you need it for work or pleasure. With the right tools and training, you’ll be able to connect with new friends and business acquaintances more effectively thanks to your new ability to speak, listen, learn and improvise in another language. And it is much simpler than people think.

Learning a second language

What’s fascinating about learning languages is that native-speakers typically use only about 2,500 distinct words and phrases on a daily basis.

A guy by the name of Dr Paul Pimsleur created the Pimsleur Approach, he spent his lifetime studying these language building blocks. By focusing specific languages on learning those 2,500 words, you can cut your learning time down by months. Speaking to the locals and communicating isn’t about how many words you know, but rather which words you can use.

The Pimsleur Approach effortlessly locks new language material into your brain after only one listen. And it only takes one 30-minute lesson a day.

The Pimsleur Approach to learning a second language

The entire Pimsleur Approach is what language learning should be: quick, fun, and easy! You’ll absorb your new language effortlessly without any reading, writing, or computer use. The Pimsleur Approach has a 100-percent guarantee: Speak in 10 days or you don’t pay.

Who is Dr. Pimsleur?

Dr. Pimsleur was a language educator for more than 20 years. He noticed that children have an amazing ability to learn new languages quickly. He spent his life developing this course to let you, as an adult, learn a new language as easily as a child would. You might not realize it, but you’ve already learned one language using the Pimsleur Approach. Your first language.

Learning a new language can be quick, easy and affordable with the breakthrough Pimsleur Approach audio training.

The Importance of Branding Your Business Online

Branding is by far one of the most important aspects of running a website. Without proper branding, typically hired from a professional advertising and marketing agency, your business will suffer.

If you were to visit a website looking for some kind of tech work done, you would need to find a website that had proper branding done. You’d also want this company to have a template on their YouTube, Twitter and Facebook fan pages that all look similar.

Branding can be a make or break subject for a majority of businesses that come online. Without proper branding, your business will suffer.

There are certain graphic design services out there that are truly excellent, while others are simply alright. You want to take the time to find a service provider who has a great portfolio built up with a lot of positive reviews from their clients.

Another aspect of branding is having a logo designed. You can learn more about logo design services by searching around the internet and asking for referrals from other business owners that you know.

Branding can be an asset or a liability for you business depending on how you build it up. If you have a team of poorly chosen designers, your branding will have a negative effect on your business.

The same is true with having a great team working with you. They will make your business look like a million bucks or more if that’s what you are looking for.

As a small business owner, you need to build your business in a way that it works for you. If you can’t afford to build your business the same way the big guns do it (throwing dollar after dollar on promotions) then finding a service provider like PTS Multimedia may be a good option for you.

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for when it comes to branding. Focus on creating great content to guarantee that your business survives long term.

5 Natural Ways to Fall Asleep

One of the most frustrating things in your daily routine is the inability to fall asleep easily. If you are a toss and turn-er you know exactly the frustrating feeling you get when preparing for bed. Here are 5 ways to naturally fall asleep without trying expensive medicines and time consuming tricks:

Do not exercise before bed: Avoid doing any exercise to close to bedtime. Exercising increases your blood flow and increases your heart rate and body reacts by having more energy. Try to keep your exercising at least 4 hours before you bed time to prevent difficulty in falling asleep. In fact it is said that doing at least 20 minutes of stretching before bed time can be helpful in relaxing your body and preparing it for sleep.

Avoid eating and drinking right before bed: Typically your body takes a bit to digest any food and if you are a late dinner eater, your body may be too busy trying to digest your food than trying to fall asleep. Stop eating 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. This goes with saying drinking alcohol or any liquids that contain caffeine does not aid you sleeping habits and can lead to a restless night.

No television before bed: Watching television while in bed can be very distracting when it comes to your body trying to fall asleep. The noises and lights can cause your brain to over think when you need it to relax. So next time leave the television watching in the living room before getting into bed. Try reading a book in bed before falling asleep.

Room temperature: Our bodies sleep best when the room is at a cooler temperature. A good temperature to set the thermostat at is 65 to 72 degrees. When your body temperature drops it helps your body slip more easily into sleep. Anything, too warm can be uncomfortable and cause you to move around making it harder to fall asleep.

Use noise machines: There are plenty of noise machines and apps for your smartphones that offer sleep aids. A soft calming noise like a rainstorm, ocean waves or ‘white noise’ can help you tune out all distractions and lull you to sleep. Most of these machines and apps come with a timer so that you are able to set up it as long as you need.

Whenever it comes to your health you must always consult your doctor for opinion and help. These tricks are all about how you prepare for bed; avoid distractions and the environment you sleep in. Try these out and sweet dreams!

Google Penguin: The Only Penguin Doing SEO

 What Is The Google Penguin?

google penguinNo, it’s not an adorable penguin that waddles around like it’s a member of Mr Popper’s Penguin tribe. It’s the new update to the Google algorithm that was officially released April 24th, 2012. It’s intention was to penalize sites for over-optimization, aka spamming. Before you get either excited or upset about this, we’re still in the early days of this so we’re not 100% sure of what the actual target for the update is. However, we have a good hunch that it’s the reason. No one likes crappy websites and the spammers that create these crappy websites.

Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net

First off, we can start to get an understanding of this update by reading what Google officially states about it. If you read the Google Webmaster blog it says this:

“The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. While we can’t divulge specific signals because we don’t want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.”

Directly From The Google Guys

Question: “Hi Matt, could you please explain how Google’s ranking and website evaluation process works starting with the crawling and analysis of a site, crawling timelines, frequencies, priorities, indexing and filtering processes within the databases etc.” RobertvH, Munich

Question: “Can you provide more details on how Google uses ‘human raters’ as part of their algorithm?” AJ Kohn, SF, CA

Now if you own a small business and your SEO provider(if you have one) is telling you that you need 100,000,000 backlinks from junky providers then you need to stop listening to them. In fact, cancel their service as soon as possible.

I’m so glad that I am in contact with the team who works with us over at Brain Smart SEO. As soon as the Penguin was released, they hosted a call that I had the pleasure of jumping on and listening to these guys talk about all things SEO. Apparently when you study SEO as much as the team does, you are already preparing and noticing that these things are happening.

These guys have already adapted our marketing plans to guarantee that our clients keep their top rankings. How cool is that?

What You Shouldn’t Do For SEO After Penguin

It used to be that you could buy a ton of backlinks from places like fiverr or other sources and load these up onto your sites.

The backlinks didn’t have to be relevant and as long as you had a bunch of them, you would outrank your opponents. To be honest, this was awesome and worked great for a while. However, now it doesn’t work quite like it used to. If you are buying thousands of poor quality links, Google is going to take this into account. They are going to actually punish you more for having an avalanche of these “poor” links.

It’s more important to have high quality and relevant links from sites that add value to your existing site.

Another aspect that is getting to be more and more important is the “social” interaction on your site. Everything from comments to interaction on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter has an effect. Every time someone clicks “Like” or “Share”, Google takes this into account. If you aren’t getting shares on your articles and posts, you need to either install a plugin that makes it easier for people to share your posts. You also need to encourage people to use these buttons and interact on your site.

What Can You Do RIGHT NOW?

One of the first things to do is get the plugin “get social” in your wordpress back office. Download and install this. Make sure you have the tweet and facebook like button and I’d recommend having the Google+ button because Google likes Google+.

Make sure you have the important links on the top of your web page. Things like “About”, “Facebook”,”Contact”,”Services” are all important and should be at the top of your web site.

The #1 thing to do is to get a subscription to SYNND. SYNND is a way to get the likes, tweets, etc rolling right off the bat. It’s recommended that you create really good content that deserves to get shared in the first place. The problem with this for most web sites is that people don’t always have that extra boost or spark to get the social media shares rolling. This gives your post social proof, and subconsciously makes more people want to share it with their friends/followers.

Another must do is press releases for your site. If you go to PRWeb.com you can buy some press releases and have them shared. Make sure you write news-worthy posts so that they really should be put out as a press release. When your press release is shared among different news sites (along with a link back to your site) you have the opportunity to get a ton of traffic back to your website. The backlinks from this press release will be great for you.

The 4 Quadrants of Time Management

Dr. Stephen Covey explains in his writing that all of our time is spent in one of four quadrants, things that are:

I. Important and urgent
II. Important but not urgent
III. Not important but urgent
IV. Not important and not urgent

Quadrant I items are easy

Think about it for a second. If you realize that something is important and urgent, you’re probably going to do it. Right?

Most of us who are leaders have the ability to recognize and do the things that are important and urgent. These are the things that we simply must do to stay in business.

Quadrant IV items are almost as easy

We understand that those items that are not important and urgent are a waste of our time. If you are reading this, I’m going to assume that you already understand this. An example of a quadrant IV item is watching TV, especially when done in excess. The same goes for checking your personal Facebook and Twitter while you are supposed to be working as these both waste your time. These activities often catch us by surprise in that we don’t realize how quickly time can be wasted doing these activities.

Quadrant III has the “not important but urgent” items

Think about some not important but urgent items. If you constantly leave your e-mail open during the day, you are probably bombarded with these not important but urgent emails on a daily basis. If something was truly important and urgent, someone would call to tell you, right?

For me I personally hate wasting time on email and have an auto-reply set up letting people know that I only check my email once a day or once every day thanks to tips from The 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. If something is truly important, people will call me or come see me. The majority of emails are not important, but appear to be urgent. My time is too valuable to spend all day replying to emails.

Try this in your office…

Ask yourself what you or some of your team members spend time on that is really not taking you to your goals.

Activities like this will help you figure out what’s truly important in your business.

Quadrant II is the most important use of your time.

The things that fall under this category directly impact the quality of life that you have. Such things that fall under this category are exercise, strategic planning, goal setting, reading nonfiction leadership/business books, taking a class, relationship building, having a social life, etc.

family time

We can all agree that these are important things in our life, but are they urgent? These are some of the things that help us rejuvenate and refresh our minds and help us improve. The problem is that we often ignore these things because they aren’t urgent, and we tend to avoid them the most.

Image: pat138241 / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

If you don’t exercise and eat right (you’re too busy) you will have the opportunity to exercise and eat right when your health fails you and you suddenly can’t work on your precious business anymore. These not-so-urgent activities, when left undone, have the potential to become a huge cost to you. This is why it’s important to budget time to do only quadrant I and II avtivities, while avoiding quadrant IV activities as much as possible.

Oh yeah, you need to start delegating the things in quadrant III.

The concept of the 4 Quadrants of Time Management was from the book First Things First. Another must-read book by Stephen Covey is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Do you have any other questions about the 4 Quadrants?
