What is Citicoline?

I just finished reading the article on An Energy Shot for the Brain. It is all about this molecule called citicoline.

I used to be a huge gamer and would often drink energy drinks to keep me up and running all night. I know that the majority of people who I would play these games with would be doing the same thing, they’d be staying up all night drinking energy drinks like Red Bull and Bawlz.

There didn’t seem to be any connection with improving my memory when I would drink these, but I did get quite the caffeine high from them.

[ACHES]Nawgan is a new drink that states on its label “What you drink when you want to think”. The St. Louis company’s website invites consumers to track their mental performance with an online memory and focus test.

Go GungHo Inc is responsible for this new find and also is introducing gel packets that carry the slogan “Ninja like focus” which will definitely apply to college students and people interested in gaming.

What is Citicoline?

Citicoline is an organic molecule that is naturally found in the body, especially in the brain. Scientists believe that citicoline speeds up the formation of brain cell membranes and may even boost the production of neurotransmitters that are essential to brain function.

In certain countries, citicoline is actually sold as a prescription drug that is used to help regenerate a persons brain after they experience a stroke. The research from this when trying to gain Food and Drug Administration approval in the US found that citicoline was no more effective than a placebo and has pretty much put the testing to rest.

Citicoline came to the U.S market in liquid form as a “medical food” that went by the name CerAxon for use in patients that experienced stroke and traumatic brain injury. Medical foods do not require approval from the FDA, but their labels must be truthful and they can be subject to a post-market review according to the FDA. CerAxon, which is sold by Ferrer Group of Barcelona, comes in two daily doses of 1,000 mg each. At this point in time it doesn’t require a prescription, but it is intended to be used under a doctor’s direction.

Where Do I Get Citicoline?

Citicoline is now found in many dietary supplements and energy drinks that are aimed at healthy people, and is found under the brand name Cognizin. Healthy Origins brand sells 250 milligram capsules for “memory function and health cognition” and sells for $48 for 150 capsules.

If you are familiar with 5-Hour Energy drinks, these little energy shots contain citicoline in a “proprietary energy blend”, but the company doesn’t release exactly how much they use.

The next time you are browsing through energy drinks at the convenience store, start to look out for citicoline and now you can understand a little bit more about why those energy drinks sometimes seem to help you remember information better.

How Memory Works [Infographic]

How Memory Works

Via: Online Colleges Blog

Memories are created when emotions are involved. Think about some of the most memorable experiences you have ever had. I’m willing to bet that these memories have some strong emotions tied to them. Things like your college graduation, your marriage, or fights with friends leave you with always remembering this information.

In part 2 of this infographic, you see that when you forget information it is usually because you were distracted when you heard the information or you failed to tie this information with something that would force you to remember. If you struggle with remembering names, you can check out the article How to Remember Names.

A Balanced Life

Part 4 of the infographic above speaks about the importance of having a healthy & balanced life. I’m always striving to find balance in my life and find myself falling out of balance more often than I would like. We need to remember that it is okay to slip sometimes and to fall out of our balance, but it’s important for us to always try to have a fairly balanced life.

Everything from the food we eat to our social engagements and the exercise we do has a larger effect than we are aware of. The more you engage in these three activities, the more fulfilled you will feel.

The problem here lies in that it is difficult to find a balance with all of these. There are so many different diets and trends when it comes to eating healthy that’s its difficult to stay up on it all. I recommend a few different books and resources for watching what you eat. A simple to follow diet is the slow-carb diet that Tim Ferris often shares in his book, The Four Hour Body.

Exercise programs are also a dime a dozen and it really depends on what you are looking to get out of an exercise program. I will always recommend people over to the P90X program that was put together by BeachBody because I have had amazing results following their program.

I hope that this post has helped you out a little bit with understanding how your memory works and how you can use this information to improve your memory.

Do you have any other tips or tricks to improve your memory?

How to Be Prepared for Tax Season

Tax season is upon us and if you didn’t know, the IRS requirements are ever changing because of how complicated our US tax system is. You can learn more about what’s new for 2011 taxes in the article, What’s New for Tax Form 1040.

At Brain Smart Success, we want to find ways to save you time and money. With that said, I’m going to provide you with some simple steps that you can take to protect yourself and how you can be prepared when it’s tax time.

Products like Turbo Tax have been created to help you do taxes yourself. Turbo Tax has been created to simplify the process by asking simple questions, updates are made whenever new rules change and they even provide live support for free. This means you can talk on the phone with a tax professional to answer any questions you may have on any responses.

Save Money & Time

You can save $100’s by using this software instead of using a paid preparer. The paid preparer is going to require you to answer the same questions that the software will ask. Instead of spending $100’s of dollars to answer these questions to a person, travel to the paid preparer’s place of work, at the preparer’s schedule, you can just answer these questions online at your convenience. What’s convenient for busy people like you and I is that you can finish all of the work at once, or you can do portions of it and continue where you left off when you have more free time.

Gather Information

Before starting your taxes, be sure you have the correct Social Security Number and date of birth for each person you’ll claim as an exemption on your return. If the name, SSN, and date of birth do not match exactly when you file the return, the IRS will reject your return and ask you to re-submit the correct information.

Gather Documents

Before you prepare your return, it will be a lot easier if you go ahead and get your needed documents together. So here’s what you’ll need to gather.

  • Proof of identification
  • Social Security Numbers for you, your spouse, and dependents
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse, and dependents
  • Wages and earnings statements: Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, etc.
  • Interest and dividends statements from banks, brokerages, etc.
  • A copy of last year’s tax return
  • Bank routing and account numbers
  • The amount you paid for childcare and the childcare provider’s tax identification number
  • Receipts for charitable donations

 Preparing Your Return

There are a few ways to go about this. We touched on Turbo Tax a little earlier but there are other options for doing it yourself.
